Dental Implants Cleveland.

Losing a tooth can be a traumatic experience for anyone. This can affect the way we feel about ourselves, and our ability to speak and eat. Many patients ask about replacement options for their tooth and about an implant replacement.

What is a Dental Implant?

It basically acts as an artificial root from which a crown, denture or bridge may be attached to. They look and function like a normal tooth would. A dental implant is made out of a Bio-compatible metal called titanium and is placed into the jaw bone. Titanium is a very strong material that does not decay and our body will grow around and form a very strong bond. This process of forming a bond around the implant is called osseointegration.

How long does it take?

The implant is allowed to heal from six weeks to nine months depending on the where the implant was placed in the jaw and the quality and volume of bone in the area.

Can anyone get an implant?

Most healthy people are suitable for this procedure but there are cases where patient may require further medical treatment before undergoing this type of surgery. Some people may have serious health issues and the risks involved in placing an implant may be very high, thus making them less than ideal candidates for an implant.

The other problem that is commonly encountered is the lack of bone in the area. After a tooth is removed the bone in the area shrinks. After a prolonged periods of time there may only be a small amount of bone remaining. The patient may require extra procedures such as a graft to grow more bone in the area. This is generally discussed at the treatment planning stage.

What are the advantages of implants?

Implants are the closest replacement to teeth available today. They can be used to replace single teeth or multiple teeth with bridges. They can also be used to prevent dentures from fall out of the mouth and improve comfort.

What is the success rate?

The success rate depends on many factors such as the type and quality of the bone, the patients health history, do they smoke, history of gum disease and more. This is all generally discussed during the consultation appointment.

In healthy patients with good bone and no grafting, nonsmokers, no history of gum disease, required success rates for osseointegration are 95%.

How long will an implant last?

This is a hard question to answer. It really depends on how the patient cleans the implant, diet, health and habits such as smoking. This is something that will be discussed at the initial appointment.
